Programs The Rocky Mountain Land Library is an outstanding and indispensable resource for students, teachers, writers, readers, residents and lovers of our land. The unique programs and activities the Library offers are unsurpassed in their study and celebration of the physical features and life of the Rocky Mountain region. Coloradans can rightly be proud and grateful for having such a forward-thinking and energetic center of knowledge and community engagement as the Rocky Mountain Land Library. --Pattiann Rogers, poet and author of The Dream of the Marsh Wren While the Rocky Mountain Land Library's site search continues, we have launched several outreach programs, each one distinct, but with the common goal of encouraging a greater awareness of the land: Rocky Mountain Land Series in partnership with the Tattered Cover Book Store In our first five years, we have hosted over 200 author programs, and numerous artist & writer's workshops. Past participants include Peter Matthiessen, Ann Zwinger, Kim Stafford, Stewart Udall, Charles Wilkinson, Annie Proulx, and Lester Brown. The Rocky Mountain Land Series was the winner of Westword's 2002 Best Literary Series, and recipient of the 2004 Friends of the EPA Award. In 2006, the 5th Anniversary of the Land Series was marked by the publication of The Landscape of Home, an anthology of evocative writings from the Rocky Mountain Land Series' first five years. Conversations on the Land in partnership with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and Colorado State University Expertly moderated by authors John Calderazzo and SueEllen Campbell, this series has brought together authors such as David Mas Masumoto, Stanley Crawford, Pattiann Rogers, Chet Raymo, Kathleen Dean Moore, and Ann Zwinger for fascinating evenings of informal conversation. Artists & Naturalists in the Classroom Since 2003, the Rocky Mountain Land Library has arranged author and naturalist visits to Front Range & Upper Arkansas Valley schools. Author and farmer David Mas Masumoto and artist Clare Walker Leslie gave us an excellent start to this exciting outreach program aimed at the next generation of environmental stewards. Further classroom visitors have included authors Pam Houston, Gary Ferguson, and Gillian Klucas. Salida Residency Program in partnership with Art Works for the Heart of the Rockies Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Rocky Mountain Land Library has established its first residency program - a wonderful working model for our future residential land study center. In the fall of 2004, the Land Library began awarding authors, artists and researchers two week retreats in Salida Colorado, allowing them to pursue the land study projects of their own design. Land Library residents also give something of their labors for the benefit of the Salida community, whether that's a public reading, a classroom visit, or whatever creative outreach a resident chooses. We have hosted 15 residents as of 2006, including artist Evan Cantor, authors Gary Ferguson, Laura Pritchett, John Maclean, and landscape photographers John Weller and Mary Peck. Rocky Mountain Land Library Publishing Program In 2006, the Rocky Mountain Land Library began a very promising collaboration with Johnson Books on a new series of books focused on land and community in the American West.
